What are fissure sealants?
Fissures are grooves and pits found naturally on surfaces of your teeth. The uneven surfaces can cause food particles and bacteria to get stuck and this can be hard to clean. Trapped food and bacteria in these fissures can lead to decay. Whilst maintaining a good oral hygiene routine and visiting your dentist regularly will help to minimise your risk of serious complications arising, you may also wish to consider the application of a fissure sealant for added protection.
What is a Fissure Sealant Made From?
Fissure sealants are a thin plastic coating that can be applied onto the fissures, covering up any grooves and creating a smooth surface. Fissure sealants are durable and allow for full function of the teeth, whilst preventing food from getting stuck and reduces the risk of requiring a filling or other dental treatment.
Who Should have Fissure Sealants?
As a preventive measure against cavities, fissure sealants are most often recommended for children who have recently had their permanent molars erupt. The first set of molars typically erupts at around 6 years of age, with the second set emerging at around 13 years of age.
Fissure sealants may also be recommended for adults with deep grooves or pits on their teeth, provided there are no cavities present.
Regardless of age, fissure sealants are effective at preventing cavities in difficult to reach areas.
The Procedure
Fissure sealants are quick and easy to apply. The procedure is painless so there is no need for anaesthetic. They can be applied during a routine dental check-up, taking only a few minutes per teeth to apply.
Caring for Teeth Post Dental Fissure Sealants Procedure
Following the application of fissure sealants, you should continue with your regular oral hygiene routine. You will notice that cleaning your teeth is now much easier and there should be less food getting caught in your teeth.
During your routine dental check-ups, your dentist will examine the sealant to ensure it remains in good condition. Sealants normally last for many years but can be worn away or chip over time so it is important to get it checked
